SMHC Age Groups by Birth Year/Player Evaluations
Youth Age Groups and Birth Years
2026–2027 Season • Planning Reference
Cutoff confirmation required before registration use. We are following the 2026 chart for the season based on National Standards.
Southernmost Hockey Club’s youth age groups are 6U, 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U. The paired-year chart below is an SMHC planning reference.
The columns are calculated using age on December 31 of the stated year. SMHC must confirm the applicable youth cutoff and select one consistent season reference before publishing final eligibility.
Age division | 2026 reference birth years | 2027 reference birth years |
6U | 2020 and younger | 2021 and younger |
8U | 2018 and 2019 | 2019 and 2020 |
10U | 2016 and 2017 | 2017 and 2018 |
12U | 2014 and 2015 | 2015 and 2016 |
14U | 2012 and 2013 | 2013 and 2014 |
16U | 2010 and 2011 | 2011 and 2012 |
18U | 2008 and 2009 | 2009 and 2010 |
How to Read the Chart
For example, a player born in 2018 falls in the 8U reference group for 2026 and the 10U reference group for 2027. The table shows standard paired-year placement; younger players playing up remain subject to SMHC evaluation, league approval and parent or guardian agreement. The 6U entry does not establish a minimum participation age.
Player Evaluation
During player evaluations, Southernmost Hockey Club (SMHC) may identify an athlete who could benefit from playing in the next age division. This option will be considered only when it is in the athlete’s best interest, taking into account skill, physical and emotional readiness, safety, and overall development. Team and league roster sizes may also factor into the decision.
When appropriate, league representatives will meet with the athlete’s family to discuss readiness, expectations, and available options. Playing up requires both league approval and the agreement of the athlete’s parent or guardian. Families are not required to accept the opportunity.
For example, an athlete eligible for 8U may be offered the option to play exclusively in 10U or, with league approval and scheduling permitting, participate in both 8U and 10U. Playing in both divisions would require registration for the additional division at the Club’s second-child discounted rate. Either option will be considered only when it is in the athlete’s best interest and agreed upon by league representatives and the athlete’s parent or guardian.
These opportunities are expected to be uncommon and will be considered individually. When appropriate, SMHC will work with families to support the athlete’s development while maintaining a safe, positive, and balanced experience for all players.
